The manufacturing of murrine

Immerse yourself in the enchanting atmosphere of Murano, a hidden gem in the Venetian lagoon, where ancient glassmaking reveals its purest and most captivating expression, passed down through centuries. The murrine, in their varied expressions, shine like gems of priceless beauty, embodying the most authentic essence of Murano tradition.

Flowers, circles, stars

These small masterpieces, known for their decorations in the shape of flowers, circles or stars, are born from the skill of artisans who use an iron rod to gather molten glass from a furnace, then immerse it into different crucibles containing glass in various colours, putting one layer over the other. Through movements reminiscent of a dance with fire, the incandescent glass mass is then shaped in a mold, acquiring its final form—whether it be a flower, star, or heart—capturing the design within the murrina for eternity.

Stretching the glass rod

This is followed by a moment of extraordinary mastery: the rod-pulling phase. The free end of the soft glass cylinder is hot-fixed to another rod, called in dialect “conzaùra,” and in this critical phase, the combined skills of two artisans are put to the test. Moving apart up to a distance of nearly 100 meters, they work the glass cylinder, refining its diameter with delicate and precise stretching. This process, carried out with great care and skill, transforms the incandescent mass into a thin and elegant rod, ready to be sectioned into countless colorful murrine, each a unique fragment of beauty. Each individual murrina is a unique testament to the skill and imagination of the Murano artisans, who are both heirs and guardians of an ancient art that continues to amaze and enchant the entire world.
